New LNG Plant in Australia's Queensland

Australia's recent four mega-projects involving LNG plants have seen second approval under the environmental prior to signing of the official project.

BG Group PLC's proposed liquefied natural gas project in Queensland is the second project to after Santos Ltd. (STO.AU) and Malaysia's Petroliam Nasional Bhd or Petronas, received the Queensland government approval last month.

Australia's new Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who was swarn in Thursday, extended an olive branch to furious resources companies by offering to negotiate a compromise on the tax, but there's no certainty she'll give much ground.

The third project is a joint venture between ConocoPhillips and Origin Energy Ltd. with the last one a standalone venture by Royal Dutch Shell PLC.

All projects are now waiting for tax reforms from the Australian federal governments.

Australia to have 100% Renewable Energy by 2020

Australia is on a path to rely on 100% on renewable energy sources by 2020. It was based on the research by Melbourne University’s Energy Research Institute through its Evironmental group Beyond Zero Emissions which was presented to the Australian Parliament.

The Zero Carbon Australia Stationary Energy report claims at a price of A$37bn ($32.4bn) a year Australia can totally replace fossil fuel baseload electricity using renewable energy technology that is already available today.

Technically, the strategy aims at a mix of 60% of energy from solar thermal with molten salt storage and 40% from wind power with possibility of advanced solar photovoltaic (PV) to hit grid parity between 2015-20.

Exxon Australian LNG Welcomed PetroChina Accord

China's oil producer PetroChina Co will be signing an accord with Exxon Mobil Corp. targeted in the first half of this year to buy liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Gorgon project in Australia under a term contract.

The world's largest oil company, ExxonMobil owns 25% of the Western Australian Project with remaining stakes by Chevron Corp with 50 percent stake and Royal Dutch Shell Plc has 25 percent. Under the agreement, Exxon agreed to sell 2 million metric tons of LNG a year from the Gorgon project.

This will be on top of PetroChina's 2 million ton per year agreement with Shell in 2008 from the Gorgon project under Shell's portfolio.

Fierce Competition in Australia's LNG Business

Royal Dutch Shell PLC has been reportedly joined the bandwagon as the latest big prospector in Australia's coal seam gas rush. This comes after news that Shell is planning to build a multibillion dollar gas export facility at Gladstone in Queensland state.

It has been a competition of media coverage alongside with BG, ConocoPhillips and Malaysia's Petronas planning to team up with local companies to convert Australia's rich CSG reserves to liquefied natural gas for export.

As to date, five LNG plants are planned to be constructed. Heavy participations comes from all corners including Liquefied Natural Gas Ltd, a smaller scale company compared to the oil giants.

Shell has already signed an exclusive right to investigate a site on Curtis Island near Gladstone for a possible LNG plant with Gladstone Port Corp and has already commenced a feasibility study.

Analysts are not ruling out that there perhaps will be hitting back at Shell by making an even higher bid for Pure Energy from BG.

Malaysian Biodiesel Sold Out

Mission New-Energy, an Australian firm  which has a stake of 100 kmta of biodiesel plant at Malaysian port of Kuantan told the press that all of the potential production is already sold out in 2009. Mission is now on its way for a second palnt which will be able to produce an extra of 250 kmta of biodiesel.

The second plant project has been delayed in construction for many months due to technology switching. Despite the global economic turmoil, Mission Energy has able to sell all of 2009 contractual production to a major global oil and biofuels player for a cost-plus-margin basis protecting it from the volatility in commodities markets.

The recent huge price drop in biodiesel last year had pushed many biodiesel producers to the brink of collapse.

PETRONAS Buys Stakes in Santos Australia LNG

Malaysia's State Oil Company, Petronas is buying a 40 percent stake in Australian energy firm Santos Ltd's Gladstone for $2.51 billion. Santos Gladstone is in the liquefied natural gas project in Australia.

Petronas' investment in the project will help to fasten the usage of coal seam gas as a feedstock as Petronas is seen as the ideal partner to help develop Santos' coal seam gas to LNG strategy.

Santos was quoting that Petronas will inject capital investment of $2.01 billion followed by remaining for the second LNG train at the Gladstone, Queensland. The key strategic alliance is due to marketing power of Petronas, the third-largest LNG producer in the world. Santos shares jumped 10.12 percent to a record high of A$20.90 by 0325 GMT, a proud achievement for both Santos and Petronas.

Other oil and gas companies such as Exxon Mobil are also taking lead in LNG project in Papua New Guinea with Santos for a race amid rising prices and a forecast surge in global demand.

Australian Titanium Oxide Production Continues

Australian TiWest, the company that produces Titanium Oxide (TiO2) will continue operation by Tronox of US Texas. TiWest titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a joint venture in western Australia. The production has been badly hit by a force majeure declaration due to natural gas supply limitation.

Tronox however mentioned that the sustainability of the TiO2 production is now susceptible to supply of natural gas and electricity.

TiWest complex houses Cooljarloo mineral sands mine, Chandala synthetic rutile plant and Kwinana titanium dioxide pigment plant. The disruption of natural gas supply cost has not been revealed yet.
